On Sunday, October 3, 1999, Dan and Marlene Gilliam loaded up "Big Red Truck" for Marlene's Gospel Music Kentucky Tour 1999.
Remembering the words of and old poem, "And miles to go before I sleep", they drove and drove and drove until they arrived in the hills of southeastern Kentucky.
Pastor George Maggard of Dayhoit Community Church in Harlan County was the host for a short revival.
George's wife, Nancy, a gracious hostess, made us feel very welcome as guests in her home.
Dan uses a beautiful volunteer to demonstrate a point in his sermon on Christian Accountability.
Along the way from Harlan County to our next host in LaGrange, KY, we had the pleasure of watching this fish play while the "Big Red Truck" had a flat tire repaired.
After a couple days of vacation in Louisville, KY, we moved into the home of Harold and Elaine Blandford. We had a delightful week-long discussion on the differences between the Protestant and Catholic faiths and learned a lot from them.
Harold, acting as Marlene's agent, arranged for Marlene to sing at three prisons in Kentucky and at the Immaculate Conception Church annual harvest festival.
Somehow a digital camera slipped into one of the prisons. In order to protect the guilty, we won't tell how. The inmates were very receptive to the message of the Gospel.
Dan spoke and Marlene gave a concert at each of the three prisons. In all cases they saw inmates in tears and several responded to invitations for prayer and/or salvation.
Marlene sang "I Need You, Daddy" and several other songs she wrote during the festival at Harold & Elaine's church.
Toward the end of the week, Elaine had the opportunity to exercise her great nursing skills as Marlene had a gall bladder attack. Her bedside manner is loving, but strict. Thanks Elaine.
The youngest Blandford, Cheyenne, treated Dan & Marlene to her rendition of Marlene's songs. She is undecided as to her future goals, but is presently considering astronaut, football player and garbage collector as possible careers.
Dallas Blandford, seen here with some of his friends, has decided to become a professional snowboarder when he completes his education. He was a bit easier to catch on film than his older brother, Dustin.
The Cat! Dan, allergic to cats, somehow survived sharing space with a stray that decided to live with the Blandfords. Dan & Marlene can attest to how easy it is to stay in a place that is so very hospitable. Special thanks to Harold and Elaine.
